Converting the Basketball Court to my Dream Kitchen, phase 3
Recently, some extra money fell into my lap and I decided I was going to buy BRAND NEW KITCHEN CABINETS!!
“What?!” You say… “that doesn’t sound like you.“
I. Know.
I was just feeling like this kitchen thing was NEVER going to happen and I am tired.
And, impatient.
I feel as though I have earned this space; it’s sunny and beautiful and I’m over the dungeon kitchen. Honestly, if I had any idea of how long this “dream kitchen” was going to actually take, I would have painted the current kitchen 3 years ago!
Funny, I should say that because that’s exactly what I’m doing now.
Ok, not exactly.
Well, kind of..
I’m painting someone else’s 80’s oak kitchen.
Wait, but I said I was buying new… was is the key word.
The Hubz and I went to 3 different places, 4 if you count the on-line, ship directly to you cabinets, and waited for quotes. This was going to be easy! We oohed and aahhed, picked the perfect whites, designed our space and sat back and waited for the numbers to come in. Thinking we would pick the fairest one and Bam! In a few weeks, we’d have an instant kitchen! I was so giddy with the excitement of this.
I should have known better.
NOTHING we do is easy.
With quotes ranging between $8,000-$13,000, we were more than sticker shocked; we pulled the plug on the “new” idea. For the record, that was just the cabinets.
JUST. THE. CABINETS.
WTF??
No install, no delivery (except the on-line quote), no counter, no knobs. Nothing besides a pretty hollow box.
Fast forward through a thoughtful gesture of the Hubz trying to surprise me by moving our current cabinets upstairs while I was away, through buying and returning stock cabinets from Lowe’s, to finally buying a matching 80’s Oak kitchen off from Craig’s List because we needed the doors to match, you will find yourself all caught up on this lengthy kitchen makeover.
The good news is that we realized we were building a cookie cutter kitchen and although it would have been fabulous, our new hodgepodge kitchen is really our Dream Kitchen. By reusing old cabinets, we were able to get creative and add in pieces that will be unique to our house, making it truly our home.
We are still living in complete chaos; cabinets being painted inside, islands being sealed, all while praying the freaking cat doesn’t decide to jump on anything when I leave the room. Its driving me absolutely crazy, but I wouldn’t change a thing.. ok, the timeline; I’d 100% change the timeline by creating one.
Currently, there’s no end in sight and maybe it never will quite be done. If it is, you can bet I’ll be tearing into the next room that afternoon!

Full Disclosure: I have been slacking on this Blog. The Kitchen was made functional [READ: Functional, NOT complete] in time for THANKSGIVING 2019. Nothing like testing everything for the first time than when you have a house full of guests and a holiday meal on the line! I will be updating the blog as much as possible during Stay at home orders from our government. In the meantime, I hope everyone stays safe and healthy.
