Make Overs and Fake Overs

Converting The Basketball Court into The Heart of Our Home: Open Kitchen, Living Room, phase 2

Hello Friends!

Boy, has it been A LONG, LONG TIME and we have been busy. For anyone wondering where I’ve disappeared to and what could I possibly be doing, let’s take a mini peek into my daily: school drop offs/pick ups, Activities, sweet Princess turned 2 and naps ON ME, we have 6 kids and they have this little habit of freezing up the computer or just needing me for everything. Oh, and it’s BASKETBALL season. (Edit: It is now Spring Soccer… Seriously, I need a laptop.)

That last one is funny; Freaking BASKETBALL.

Confused?…. You must be new to the group. Or, you didn’t read the title. This project of  “converting the basketball court..” started when we bought a house with a basketball court INSIDE. We left it untouched for over a year. Our kids played ball in it only to show off and brag to friends or when we forced them into a game of “H-O-R-S-E” or “Around the World.”

NO ONE PLAYED BASKETBALL.

EVER.

Now that the hoop has been down for a year and a half, we have both Boss Man and Baby Girl playing on separate teams, for 2 separate schools, in 2 different towns. Seriously, you can’t make this up; aren’t kids fun?!

Phase 2

We ended the summer with finally finishing the painting. This Space measures 29’x25′ with ceilings extending up to 14.5′. The color we finally chose was, “Repose Gray” by Sherwin Williams. The Base, however, is Pristine by Valspar. The reasoning for this was my local shop sells Valspar. I’d have to drive over an hour to get Sherwin Williams paint and because when I paint, I have been known to run out of supplies in the middle of a coat, I really need to be able to grab more paint before my brush dries. I gotta say, I really loved painting with this base. It’s thick and really smooth; totally worth the few extra bucks.

Once the paint was dried, I was more than ready to put down the floor; remember there are 43 boxes all around the room. Guess how many times we moved them while painting? Too many. I was so done with moving these f-ing boxes. I needed this floor down.

After dragging the chop saw in from the barn and gathering the few other tools needed, I had the Hubz help me align the first 2 rows and then I went to town. The original plan was to work on it a bit at a time together, but I missed this space. I wanted it back and I wanted it functional again. I set mini goals, like “go to bed when you reach the window..” and “today, I’ll try to do 7 boxes while the kids watch a show..” But, once I started, I changed my mini goal to, “Get it done.”

To “finish” this beauty, it took  2 nights of staying up past midnight and 2 days of neglecting my kids for hours, with a 3rd day added in for the porch. The kids LOVED it; T.V. Babysitters and saying “yes” to whatever snack they could get on their own. It was as if they were living “The Dream.”

Keeping the momentum going, I did the porch a few days later.

I’m SO IN LOVE with this space and cannot wait to show you more! Next up…Cabinets.
